What are the popular topics that everyone is interested in? Using research tools like the Adword Equalizer, you would find which keywords people are using to search with.
Let's say for example you found "health" as a hot topic, and narrowed it down to "alternative health". Well, this is still too broad of a market.
Step 2
So now that you have a general term "alternative health" to focus on, you need to break it down into an even smaller category. This is what's known has tightening the niche.
Conduct a search on all the different kinds of alternative health, to see if there's a potential niche.
The term "homeopathy" comes up - and now you have your primary target.
Step 3
To determine if "homeopathy" is really a potentially successful niche, let's do another search.
This time, go to the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and type in "homeopathy". On the Results Page, there is a Choose Column.
Click on this and scroll down to Show Average CPC - this, along with Traffic Estimates and First Pay Bid Estimates will help you determine the max bids of other affiliates.
If other affiliates are spending their advertising money on this search term, then it's probably among the profitable niche markets.
The higher the top three bids are, then the higher the profit and competition is likely to be.
Step 4
Now we need to know which search terms prospects are using to find this niche keyword.
Get a list of Keyword Results from the Google Adwords Keyword Tool, by typing in the niche affiliate marketing subject "homeopathy".
Step 5
Now to find how many websites are competing for each keyword. The ideal number would be beween 30,000 - 100,000.
Just go to http://www.google.com and type in "homeopathy", and this will give you the total results.
Step 6
Check the ratio of real supply and value demand. To get the Demand results of "homeopathy", go to Yahoo!Small Business for the search. The Supply results are the ones you got from Google.
You want a Value Demand of at least 2000-3000 (and always has to be higher than the Real Supply). The sweet spot for Supply is 80,000 - anything higher means very high competition.
But because you are looking for a tight niche, the Supply should be below 2,000 or so.
Step 7
Analyze the niche market idea's potential by determining how many times each term for "homeopathy" was searched for last month.
An example of what you would type in is:
"#" of homeopathy searched for february.
This will bring up the total results of how many people searched for that specific term last month.
This can all be done with a Google search - but be sure to use quotations for the number of results compared with each keyword result.
Compare the number of potential search engine traffic with the number of competitor websites that are already marketing this niche (Demand vs Supply).
Compare each niche markets keyword for results to see which one has the most potential for your niche.
